Larsa Organization Joins Meeting on Iraq’s UPR

On September 5, 2024, the Larsa Organization took a proactive role in a critical consultative and coordination meeting with various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) holding consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The meeting, also attended by key representatives from the Iraqi Ministry of Justice, was centered on preparing the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) report for the Republic of Iraq, scheduled for presentation in Geneva in early 2025.

Organized by the Popular Aid Organization (PAO), this meeting brought together influential figures, including Mr. Zidan Khalaf, Human Rights Advisor to the Prime Minister, Mr. Haidar Abdul Ilah Arif, Director of the Human Rights Department at the Federal Ministry of Justice, and a representative from the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Larsa Organization, recognized for its consultative status with ECOSOC since 2022, leveraged this platform to advocate for a more inclusive approach to human rights reporting. During the meeting, Larsa underscored the importance of integrating civil society perspectives into the UPR report, particularly in areas related to monitoring, recommendations, and the mechanisms for implementing them.

As part of its commitment, Larsa emphasized the need for a collaborative framework that allows NGOs and government bodies to work closely in preparing future reports. By doing so, Larsa aims to ensure that the voices of civil society are not only heard but are pivotal in shaping Iraq’s human rights policies and practices.

Our participation in this meeting reflects Larsa’s ongoing dedication to advancing human rights and social justice in Iraq. We believe that constructive dialogue and partnership with governmental and international entities are essential to creating meaningful change. As we continue to build on our consultative status with ECOSOC, Larsa remains committed to advocating for transparent, accountable, and inclusive processes that align with the highest standards of human rights.

We invite you to stay connected with us as we continue to champion the cause of human rights and work towards a more just and equitable Iraq. Follow our journey as we engage in vital conversations and actions that drive positive change for all.
