Larsa Sheds Light on the Historical and Cultural Role of the Mandaean Community in Basra
As part of the Project to Enhance the Rights of Iraqi Minorities, Larsa Organization, in partnership with the Alliance of Iraqi Minorities Network (AIM) and with the support of Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), organized an awareness activity at the Mandaean Mandi in Basra.
The event introduced participants to the rich history, religious practices, and cultural contributions of the Mandaean community, one of Iraq’s oldest religious minorities. Through presentations and discussions led by community representatives, the session highlighted the pillars of the Mandaean faith, the challenges facing the community due to migration, and the importance of preserving the Aramaic language and heritage.
The activity also emphasized the role of Mandaean women and youth, showcasing their active contributions in maintaining community identity and promoting equality. Open discussions with participants created a valuable space for dialogue, addressing demographic changes, cultural preservation, and the community’s aspirations for the future.
This initiative reflects Larsa Organization’s commitment to protecting diversity, promoting peaceful coexistence, and building stronger partnerships to safeguard the rights of minorities in Iraq.
